World Junior Club Hockey Cup is an annual tournament that brings together famous youth hockey clubs that are winners and prize-winners of championships and tournaments in their countries.

The World Cup among youth club teams has a fairly rich history and the official status of the International Hockey Federation - “a tournament sanctioned by the IIHF”.

For 8 years, teams from the following countries took part in the Cup: Austria, Belarus, Denmark, Kazakhstan, Canada, China, Latvia, Norway, Russia, Slovakia, USA, Finland, Czech Republic, Switzerland and Sweden.

The ninth World Cup will again be held in Sochi, all matches of the tournament will be hosted by the Shayba Ice Arena.

Format

The teams participating in the tournament are divided into two subgroups and play matches among themselves within the groups in a round-robin system. The first two teams from each group determine the winner and prize-winners of the tournament. Teams that lost in the semi-finals play for third place. The winners of the semi-finals determine the winner of the tournament in the final match.

Trophy

After each World Cup final match, the winner takes the trophy home. The design of the cup was changed after the first tournament, which took place in 2011 and was crowned with the victory of the Red Army. The second cup, which was presented in 2012, remains unchanged to this day.

The silver cup of the first ever World Cup was made in Italy. On July 28, 2011, the cup was presented to the fans for the first time, after which it went to Omsk. On September 3, after the final siren, the captain of the Red Army, Roman Lyubimov, raised the new trophy above his head. The cup became the permanent possession of the club and is now in the CSKA museum.

On August 11, 2012, a presentation of the new trophy took place, the design of which remains unchanged to this day. The material from which the trophy was made and its shape have changed. The second cup is bronze, with a multi-layer galvanic nickel coating. The base is decorated with a pedestal made of valuable wood. The cup's two shaped handles are shaped like clubs and follow the shape of the bowl that sits on top of the trophy.

Logo

Since 2016, the World Cup logo remains recognizable in the usual arrangement of elements, but is somewhat modified depending on the location of the tournament. In 2016, the World Cup was hosted by two cities of the Republic of Tatarstan - Naberezhnye Chelny and Nizhnekamsk. The colors of the flag and coat of arms of the Republic of Tatarstan were used in the emblem. The background for the image of the hockey player was a folk Tatar ornament, which is adjacent to the image of the globe.

The 2017 logo uses the colors of the flag and coat of arms of the Sverdlovsk region: green, white and blue. The green part of the logo is stylized to resemble malachite, a mineral for which deposits of the Urals were known in the past. A decorative image of malachite became the background for the logo, along with the blue half, identical in color to the stripe from the regional flag.

The 2018 World Cup logo has acquired the colors of the Sirius Educational Center, whose name is now mentioned in the official name of the tournament.

Semi-final.

RUSSIA - USA 3:4 B (1:1; 1:2; 1:0; 0:0; 0:1)

The Russians scored goals: Kaprizov (Vorobiev), Guryanov (Kudako, Karnaukhov), Guryanov.

The appearance of Ilya Samsonov in goal was not a surprise. Forward Danil Yurtaikin returned to the lineup, while defender Artem Volkov and forward German Rubtsov did not take part in the match.

At the beginning, the game went on almost non-stop, but it didn’t get to really dangerous moments. The calm and careful course of the match was disrupted by the first line of the Russians: Polunin forced a fight in the Americans' zone, Vorobyov left the puck to Kaprizov, who jumped out from behind the goal and shot through Parsons. It was heading towards the break when luck smiled on the Americans - Keller shot from the corner of the court, hitting his partner: a rebound and 1:1.

The second period began with attacks by the Russian team, one of which ended with a goal by Guryanov, who finished the puck into the goal after a long-range throw by Kudako. The Americans responded to the Russians' goal with two, first Kanin scored on the power play, and then White again, with the help of a rebound, brought the US team ahead - 3:2.

At the beginning of the third period, the Americans had the opportunity to increase their advantage thanks to a free throw, but Keller was unable to beat Samsonov, who tightly caught the puck. Not even a minute had passed - Denis Guryanov showed how to implement a one-on-one situation, scoring a double. The remaining time until the end of the period was spent in double-edged attacks, but at the time of the siren the scoreboard showed 3:3. The extra ten minutes were a continuation of the third period: dangerous attacks, but again without results.

In the shootout, luck smiled on the opponent - Troy Terry scored the winning shot.

Based on materials from the Russian Hockey Federation

This was the sixth tournament as the head coach of the Russian youth team. The previous World Championships in Montreal and Toronto were the first in which Bragin did not lead the Russian team to the finals - the team won bronze medals. Previously, Russian hockey players led by Bragin won three silver medals (Calgary/Edmonton 2012, Toronto/Montreal 2015 and Helsinki 2016), and in 2011 in the same Buffalo they became world champions.

Back in Buffalo

For hockey fans, the American city of Buffalo is associated primarily with one of the main victories of Russian hockey in the post-Soviet era - the gold medals at the 2011 World Youth Championship. Then Bragin's team, with Evgeny Kuznetsov and Vladimir Tarasenko in the lineup, won a crazy victory in the final over the Canadians, winning back from a score of 0:3. The historic victory in Buffalo 2011 remains the only one for the Russians at the MFM in the last 15 years.

Seven years later, the Russian youth team again had to play the World Championship near Lake Erie, and it is headed by the same Valery Bragin. Unlike 2011, Bragin’s team came to the United States without hockey players who consistently played at the adult level, and the main star of the Russians was Andrei Svechnikov, who is considered the only real competitor of the Swede Rasmus Dahlin for first place in the 2018 NHL draft.

Group: two of four

Russian hockey players started the tournament unsuccessfully, losing to the Czech team with a score of 4:5 in a brilliant match. The Russians fought back twice; with the score 2:5, Bragin's team reduced the gap to a minimum, but the Russian team did not have enough time for more. The performance of main goalkeeper Alexei Melnichuk, who allowed four goals, drew a lot of criticism.

“We will work, improve the game in the minority and the majority,” Bragin said after the match. “The first game is always difficult. The problem is that this year they did not play at the World Championships, so they do not have such experience, there is a completely different level of hockey here. This the first game, and it turned out to be a little messy, although we played well at times.”

The next match with the Swiss (5:2) turned out to be a mirror image for the Russians. They took the lead twice, but each time they allowed their opponents to come back. The outcome of the game was decided by goals from Arthur Kayumov and Georgy Ivanov. The next game of the Russian national team, against the Belarusian team, ended with a similar score (5:2). The double was scored by Klim Kostin, who, together with Artur Kayumov, shared second place in the list of top scorers of the group stage (5 points) - only American Casey Mittelstadt was higher (6 points).

The Russian team had to complete the group stage with a match against one of the tournament favorites - the Swedish team. By that time, Russian hockey players had already secured their participation in the quarterfinals, and Vladislav Sukhachev had staked out his place as number one. The opponents had a fiery first period with four goals scored, and scored half as many goals in the remaining 40 minutes. As a result, the Swedes put the squeeze on the Russian team in a shootout - .

“The unnecessary deletions took a lot of energy,” Bragin explained the defeat. “The goals conceded in the first period, let’s say, were easy. It wasn’t the opponent who showed skill, but our mistakes that led to them. We will correct this. There were a lot of chances to win, but that’s how it is.” it worked out."

As a result, the Russian team took third place in the group, behind the Swedes and Czechs, and received the current world champions Americans as opponents in the quarterfinals.

Quarterfinals: not enough puck

“The Americans have a very good team, they play very well, you need to act tactically against them correctly,” Valery Bragin said before the quarterfinals. “They have a good majority, so we need to remove deletions.”

The installation didn't work. Already in the first minute, Russian national team defender Artem Minulin “grabbed” two minutes of delay with his stick, and the Americans opened the scoring. Soon the Russians were again in the minority, but held out, after which Klim Kostin and Marcel Sholokhov entered the zone, and the latter evened the score with a throw from an awkward hand. Nevertheless, the US team's advantage was still noticeable (the score in the first twenty minutes was 19-6), and in the 15th minute Kailer Yamamoto put the Americans ahead.

The Russians spent the end of the first period and the beginning of the second in the minority - defender Vladislav Semin received a 5+20 penalty. Having fought back, Bragin's team gradually began to even out the game, and at the beginning of the third period, Andrey Altybarmakyan scored his first goal of the tournament. In the 53rd minute, the Americans took the lead again: Dylan Samberg threw the puck into the zone, and Kieffer Bellows was the first to rebound from the boards, whom Artur Kayumov missed. Marcel Sholokhov could have equalized the score, but hit the post, and in the last minute of the third period the Americans hit an empty net - 4:2.

“We didn’t have enough goals,” Valery Bragin said after the game. “There were chances, but this is hockey, with the score tied, it was the opponent who managed to score a goal, not us. As for mistakes, we warned that the Americans are starting very strongly. And today in the first period they had an advantage. In the second period the advantage was already on our side. And the third was equal until the puck was scored by the enemy."

No experience, no masters

“Of course, (Russian) hockey players lack experience, international experience, experience playing in the KHL,” the 1992 Olympic champion and former head coach of the Russian junior team Vitaly Prokhorov told the R-Sport agency before the tournament. “Let us remember that in the teams "Bragin's results have always been made by people who played in the KHL on a regular basis. Now there are no such people. Why not is a separate conversation."

The lack of experience definitely affected the Russian team's results in Buffalo. Let us recall that the 1998 players missed their World Junior Championships due to the “meldonium scandal” and had not previously played at a serious international level. All this, coupled with the lack of really bright players at this age, led to the fact that the Russian team became the worst in the tournament in terms of power play (one converted attempt out of twenty).

It is significant that the top scorers of the Russian team at the tournament were Klim Kostin (8 points) from the St. Louis Blues system and Andrei Svechnikov (5) from the Barry Colts. “Born in 1998 - well, you can see for yourself. Klim Kostin and Andrei Svechnikov are a year and two younger, respectively, but they looked stronger than many of the guys,” Valery Bragin said after the quarterfinals.

Great hopes before the tournament were associated with Artem Manukyan, Mikhail Maltsev, Andrey Altybarmakyan, who compete in Russia but do not have much playing experience in the KHL, but in total these forwards have only one goal to their name. Russian “legionnaires” Vitaly Abramov and Dmitry Sokolov also played clearly below their capabilities - both scored one goal each.

The 2019 World Youth Championships will be held in the Canadian cities of Vancouver and Victoria. The contract of the head coach of the Russian national team Valery Bragin expires at the end of the season; the specialist refused to talk about his future after the end of the tournament.

Venue and schedule of MFM-2020

The world championship among youth teams at the turn of 2019 and 2020 will be hosted by two Czech cities - Ostrava and Třinec. The main arena of the tournament will be the Ostravar Arena, which has a capacity of 10,004 spectators. It will host all the games of Group B, where the host team of the Czech Republic will play, two quarter-final matches, both semi-finals, a match for third place and the final. In Třinec, guests of the 2020 World Cup will be hosted by the Werk Arena, where the turnout can reach 5,200 fans.

The group stage matches will be played from December 26 to December 31, 2019, all quarter-finals will be played on January 2, the semi-finals on January 4, and the match for third place and the main championship final will take place on January 5, 2020.

Regulations and format of the MFM-2020

In recent years, the regulations of the World Youth Championship have not undergone major changes. The tournament is attended by the ten strongest world teams, which are divided into two groups of five teams. In a round-robin system, everyone plays one match against each other. The main task at this stage is not to take last place, since the other four teams qualify for the playoffs, and the worst teams in their groups play a consolation round, where the losing team leaves the strongest division. It is worth paying attention: if two teams score the same number of points, the winner of their head-to-head meeting is higher, but if more than two teams have identical indicators, then the difference in goals scored and goals conceded is compared.

The system for forming quarterfinal pairs is also classic:

  • 1st place of group “A” – 4th place of group “B”;
  • 2nd place of group “A” – 3rd place of group “B”;
  • 3rd place in group “A” – 2nd place in group “B”;
  • 4th place in group “A” – 1st place in group “B”.

The winners of the quarterfinal pairs move to Ostrava in unison, where they will have to fight in the ½ finals, and the losers finish their performance in the tournament. Based on the results of the semi-finals, two pairs are formed: one will play in the bronze final, and the other will fight in the main final of the MFM 2020.

Participants of the MFM-2020

Ten of the strongest youth teams will take part in the upcoming world forum. The Czech national team received the right to play at the 2020 World Cup as the host country of the tournament; The USA, Canada, Russia, Finland, Switzerland, Sweden, Slovakia and Kazakhstan retained their place in the elite division following the results of the 2019 World Cup; The German team won the first division last year and received a promotion.

Winners of the World Youth Hockey Championships

The upcoming youth world championship will be the 44th in history. Over the previous 43 tournaments, the Canadian team won the most gold medals, with 17 victories already, but last year they were embarrassed at the home world championship, dropping out in the quarter finals. The next team with the most titles is the Russian team, which finished third the year before. For the current world champion Finnish team, this was the fifth gold in history. The full list of gold medalists is presented below:

  • Canada – 17 times;
  • Russia + CIS + USSR – 13;
  • Finland – 5;
  • USA – 4;
  • Sweden and the Czech Republic – 2;

Bets and forecasts for the group stage of the 2020 World Cup in the Czech Republic

Group “A”: Finland, Switzerland, Sweden, Slovakia, Kazakhstan.

The current world champion Finnish team, which is now the main favorite of Group A, will play here. This is evidenced by the quotes of the bookmaker Betcity, which offer odds of 2.00 that it will be the representatives of Suomi who will take the top line at the end of the round-robin tournament. The second favorite is the Swedish national team: last year Tre Krunur won their group, but now they believe in them a little less, offering a coefficient of 2.10 for their victory in the group.

The middle peasants of Group “A” are the teams of Slovakia and Switzerland. Last year they competed in different groups: the Swiss were able to score 4 points, while the Slovaks were content with 3 points. However, now it is the “crusaders” who are seen as the favorites in the battle for third place in the standings. BC "Betcity" offers odds of 2.00 for this outcome, and "Knights of Tatra" is valued at odds of 2.50.

The main outsider of the group seems to be the Kazakhstan team, which a year earlier did not score a single point, but sensationally beat Denmark in the consolation round and remained in the strongest division. The status of the weakest team does not mean that the Kazakhs do not need to be watched. BC "Betcity" offers interesting options for their performance in the tournament: for example, on a total of more than 0.5 points for the Kazakhstan national team you can bet with odds of 2.95, and on a total of more than 24.5 goals conceded, odds of 1.85 are offered.

Group “B”: USA, Russia, Canada, Czech Republic, Germany

Group B is truly the group of death this year. The national teams of the USA, Russia, Canada and the host of the tournament, the Czech Republic, can rightfully claim any of the top four places, and the main outsider is Germany, which only this season joined the strongest division. Of course, the Germans are unlikely to talk about reaching the quarterfinals, but they are quite capable of clinging to the points. BC "Betcity" offers odds of 2.55 for a total of more than 0.5 points for the German national team. Any other national team has a chance to compete for first place in the group, but the quotes consider the Canadians to be the favorites:

  • Canada – 2.00;
  • Russia – 3.50;
  • USA – 4.00;
  • Czech Republic – 11.00.

Chances of the Russian national hockey team at the 2020 World Cup

Last year, the Russian team managed to reach the bronze medals, but the quality of play of Oleg Bragin’s players became more and more modest every year, especially in status games, where the Russians regularly pressed themselves against their goal, acting as passively as possible. This is largely why, on the eve of the upcoming world forum, changes took place in the national team’s coaching staff: Yuri Babenko finished his job, and Igor Larionov was called in his place, whose powers will include improving the team’s attacking actions.

Fortunately, now the lineup is one of the strongest in terms of names in recent years. All three goalies have already gained experience playing in the KHL. Defenders Romanov, Zhuravlev, Misyul, Galenyuk and Pylenkov are the main players of their clubs. Forward Grigory Denisenko is the best scorer of the 2019 World Cup, many other forwards also have a stable place in their teams. A serious loss for the team is Nikita Rozhkov, who looked great at the Four Nations tournament, but a broken leg will not allow him to play in the tournament. However, now the Russians have every chance to fight for gold at the 2020 World Cup, and Betcity Bookmaker offers odds of 4.00 for this outcome.

    THANK YOU so much for the very useful information in the article. Everything is presented very clearly. It feels like a lot of work has been done to analyze the operation of the eBay store

    • Thank you and other regular readers of my blog. Without you, I would not be motivated enough to dedicate much time to maintaining this site. My brain is structured this way: I like to dig deep, systematize scattered data, try things that no one has done before or looked at from this angle. It’s a pity that our compatriots have no time for shopping on eBay because of the crisis in Russia. They buy from Aliexpress from China, since goods there are much cheaper (often at the expense of quality). But online auctions eBay, Amazon, ETSY will easily give the Chinese a head start in the range of branded items, vintage items, handmade items and various ethnic goods.

        What is valuable in your articles is your personal attitude and analysis of the topic. Don't give up this blog, I come here often. There should be a lot of us like that. Email me I recently received an email with an offer that they would teach me how to trade on Amazon and eBay. And I remembered your detailed articles about these trades. area I re-read everything again and concluded that the courses are a scam. I haven't bought anything on eBay yet. I am not from Russia, but from Kazakhstan (Almaty). But we also don’t need any extra expenses yet. I wish you good luck and stay safe in Asia.

  • It’s also nice that eBay’s attempts to Russify the interface for users from Russia and the CIS countries have begun to bear fruit. After all, the overwhelming majority of citizens of the countries of the former USSR do not have strong knowledge of foreign languages. No more than 5% of the population speak English. There are more among young people. Therefore, at least the interface is in Russian - this is a big help for online shopping on this trading platform. eBay did not follow the path of its Chinese counterpart Aliexpress, where a machine (very clumsy and incomprehensible, sometimes causing laughter) translation of product descriptions is performed. I hope that at a more advanced stage of development of artificial intelligence, high-quality machine translation from any language to any in a matter of seconds will become a reality. So far we have this (the profile of one of the sellers on eBay with a Russian interface, but an English description):
